George Voukanos. Music Composer - Born in Athens in 1972.
He has studied
Byzantine Music (Diploma), Monody (Diploma), Piano and Theory (Diploma) in the
National Conservatory, the Apollonion Conservatory, the Greek Conservatory and
graduated from the Athens Conservatory. His tutors were, among others, Sp.
Peristeris, Laz. Kouzinopoulos, Kyr. Tsolakis, Kaiti Apostolaki, Kostas
Pashalis, Kiki Morfoniou, Iro Palli, Ant.Kontogiorgou, Maestro Lucas Karytinos,
Marcos Dragoumis.
He studied Higher Theory with the Maestro George Aravidis & Maestro Eleutherios Kalkanis. At the same time he finished his studies in the Higher Ecclesiastical School of Athens and the Theological School of the Athens University.
He is now doing his Doctorate on Music Technologies in Aegean University. He's been involved with musical productions on the Radio and composing music for advertisements & TV Series. For three years he was a member of ERT (National Radio & Television of Greece) choir under the guidance of Anthony Kontogeorgiou.
In 1992 he composed music for the play "Certificate of Edman”, directed by Lydia Koniordou. In 1997 he composed music for children's play "the Lese of Socrates" by Dimitris Potamitis for the National Theatre of Larnaca (Cyprus) which was a great success. In the year 2001 he composed music for the play "Eternal Miracle" which was written by Takis Chrysoulis and sponsored by the Pedagogic Institute of Theatre and Show. In 2002 he composed music for the play "Lysias Speech in Favor of the Weak and Strong", and in 2005 for the comedy, “Ei! Psit!”, that was also written by Takis Chrysoulis.
In the year 2000 he performed his first symphonic poem, "Jubilee” at Athens Music Hall, which was written for the official celebration of 2000 years of Christianity and was sponsored by the Church of Greece. Following this, he composed the symphonic poem, "Visions-John Kapodistrias", with the poetry of George Kissoudis. This was sponsored by the Centre of European Studies and Research. "John Kapodistrias".
This performance was recorded by the Modern Music Orchestra of ERT.
He also performed symphonic songs under the title, "Journey to the Dream-AI. Papadiamantis", dedicated to Papadiamantis' year, with the Modern Music Orchestra of ERT, the Choir of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece "Melodious Voices" and children's choir "St. Joseph".
In 2002 he composed his symphonic work, "Higher of Virtues - Areton Anotera", in libretto by Dimitris Roubanis, commemorating the Olympic Games. He performed this at Athens Music Hall on the 5th June of the same year with the National Symphonic Orchestra and the choir of ERT. This work was also performed in many other cities in Greece, Switzerland and Germany and other countries until the 2004 Olympic Games. This work presented at Munich in Germany by the German Olympic Committee as one of the best symphony works for the 19th – 20th century.
In 2003 he performed his rhapsody for string-orchestra and traditional instruments, "Rhapsody of Mikrasia" with poetry by I. Hatzifotis. In 2003 he also wrote the Symphony Circle Songs for Piano, Orchestra and 2 Soloists, “The Birth of a Dream”.
He composed the symphony "Child Visions”, which was performed on 2nd October 2003 at the Herod Atticus Theatre in the Athens Festival.
He performed his song, “Asking for Love” with the singer, Vicky Leandros and the Melody Symphony Orchestra on 6th August 2004. This was performed under the Acropolis in front of 4,500 people at the Olympic Gala, for the A.R.D. National German Television. Later that year, this song was included on the CD “Vicky Sings Mikis Theodorakis” (Sony - BMG Ariola).
Also in 2004 he wrote the music Soundtrack for the Film, “Terra Olympia”. This work was performed on the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games at the Ancient Stadium of Ancient Olympia.
He also composed the Symphony Poem, “Lord Byron - Walks in Beauty”. This was performed by the baritone, Timothy Sharp and the soprano, Rosemary Kipraiou at the celebration of The Day of European Languages.
In 2005 he performed a new symphony work, “The Steps of Apostle Paul” under the Akropolis in Athens at the final ceremony for The World Council of Churches at Aeropagos.
In the summer of 2005 he presented songs performed by the famous tenor, Mario Fragoulis: “The Dream Travel”, with the Melody Chamber Orchestra. At Christmas 2005, he wrote music for a choir, “The White Christmas Tails”.
In 2006 he composed three new symphony works which were performed by the Symphony Orchestra of Municipality of the city of Athens: “Requiem for an unsung hero”, “Music Icons”, and “Tarantella Mediterranea”. The last work was inspired by the musical culture of Southern Italy. In November he will present to the city of Patras (Cultural City of Europe for 2006) the Symphonic Work, “Canon of Patras – Saint Andrew”.
He finished the circle of songs, “The Cry of the Dreamer – John O’ Reilly Boyle”, for the soprano Norah King. These songs were inspired by the landscape and musical colours of Ireland.
He is also preparing his opera, "The Rising Sun: Constantine the Great", (lyrics by Demetrios Roubanis) and the modern opera, “The Train”, (Lyrics by Anna Athanasiadou).
He has co-operated as a composer in many theatrical productions, soundtracks and audio Books and has written music for many documentaries and TV serials for Greek Television. He has also performed in many cities all over Greece. Also he will present his symphonic songs entitled, "Words of Bow-Andrew Karkavitsas" dedicated to the year of Karkavitsas.
Since 2007 he is the General Director & Artistic director of the Institute of Art & Culture Melody Spirit (Non Profit Organization)
Since 2012 he is the artistic director of the International Festival of Art and Culture of the Municipality Andravidas-Kyllinis
